Time Warner Cable Inc (NYSE:TWC) and other cable companies are accusing Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL), Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) and other internet giants of being the real threat to net neutrality.
According to The National in a report, Time Warner Cable Inc (NYSE:TWC) and other companies in the National Cable and Telecommunications Association lobbying group have said in official documents to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that giants like Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL), Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) and Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) are the companies which could pose actual dangers to net neutrality.
The group told the FCC that companies like Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) could harm cable companies because they have the power to charge cable companies like Time Warner Cable Inc (NYSE:TWC) money for their subscribers to gain access to their sites.
According to The national, the group told the FCC in the filing:
“A relatively concentrated group of large [entities]—such as Google, Netflix, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, and Facebook—have enormous and growing power over consumers’ ability to access the content of their choice on the Internet.”
Furthermore, they wrote that:
“It makes no sense to focus exclusively on Internet access providers and ignore conduct by [websites] that threatens similar harms.”
The current issue surrounding Time Warner Cable Inc (NYSE:TWC), cable companies and companies like Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) stems from the current debate about net neutrality. Essentially, the principle holds that internet service providers should treat all data over the internet as equal and should therefore not favor certain types of data and certain companies’ data over others during transmission.
