NPD group has released its statistics for September. According to the report, Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE)’s PlayStation 4 is taking the lead in the console sales. Sales of video game related products rose to 2% as compared to the same time last year. The game related sales are now brushing $1.1 billion mark. In a program on The Street, Britanny Omer reported that Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE)’s PlayStation has beaten Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) despite of the predictions done by Wedbush Securities analyst ,Michael Pachter, which went against Sony.
Software sales experienced a tumble in September. NPD report shows that software sales fell 36% to $481.2 as compared to September 2014. On the other hand, hardware sales went through a surge. Hardware sales in the month of September went up by 136% to $432.7 million year-over-year. Interestingly, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) contributed more than 85% to these hardware sales.
As for game sales, Activision Blizzard’s Destiny broke all the records. It’s recently launched and got a lot of appreciation because of its unique idea and colossal gameplay. Destiny game was sold more for Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) Xbox One as compared to Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE)’s PlayStation 4. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) free roll out for Destiny might be the reason behind this.
Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) sold more than 550,000 units in September. This is triple of the sales figures recorded in August. Madden NFL 15 and FIFA 15 were the second and third most sold games in the month. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Sony are apparently going head to head in the console war.
Jeffrey Ubben‘s ValueAct Capital owns over 74 million shares in Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Mario Gabelli‘s Gamco Investors owns over 3 million shares in Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE).
