McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) and Yum! Brands, Inc. (NYSE:YUM) were pitted against each other in a segment of Global Rivals on CNBC.
According to CNBC, McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) is a symbol of the Americanization of the world. Founded in 1955 with headquarters now in Oak Brook, Illinois, the company had over $28 billion in revenue in 2013.
The first McDonald’s restaurant was opened by brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald in 1940, according to CNBC. However, McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) would not have been possible without Ray Croc, the franchisee who later bought the company from the founders and turned it into the global corporation it is today.
According to CNBC, McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) now has 35,000 restaurants in 119 countries which serve about 70 million people every single day.
As for Yum! Brands, Inc. (NYSE:YUM), the company manages three brands: KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut. Founded in 1997 after being spun off from PepsiCo, Inc. (NYSE:PEP), the company which is now based in Louisville, Kentucky had $13 billion in revenue last year, according to CNBC.
Furthermore, according to the Global Rivals segment, Yum! Brands, Inc. (NYSE:YUM) has more stores than McDonald’s as it has about 40,000 stores in 128 countries.
The report also notes that Yum! Brands, Inc. (NYSE:YUM), like McDonald’s, has had its dividends grow consistently over time.
Nonetheless, the report also notes that Yum! Brands, Inc. (NYSE:YUM), likes its rival, is struggling to grow in America. However, it was also mentioned that the company now gets 70% of its profits from outside of the U.S.

McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) investors includes the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust managed by Michael Larson which reported a stake that is comprised of about 10.87 million shares in the company by the end of March. Another investor is Jim Simons’ Renaissance Technologies which reported about 8.52 million shares in the same period.
Yum! Brands, Inc. (NYSE:YUM) shareholders includes the hedge fund Emerging Sovereign Group managed by J Kevin Kenny Jr which had about 1.71 million shares in the company by the end of the first quarter. Another hedge fund with a stake in the restaurants company is Jim Simons’ Renaissance Technologies which had 720,030 also by the end of March.
