Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has launched a lot of game changing products, be it on the hardware side or the software side. The company always tries to stay ahead of the competition.
Morgan Brennan of CNBC reported on a patent filed by Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) about larger monitors that are completely made of glass. She was joined by John Simons, Associated Press Technology Editor and they discussed about the patent filed by the company.
“Apple has filed a patent for mobile devices and large monitors made entirely of glass. So could this be a game changer for the tech giant?” Brennan stated about the patent being filed by Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) recently.
The patent filing showed some rough sketches and these not just included monitors, it also included mobile devices and TVs too. So are these products going to attract a lot of consumers? Simmons feels that the new “all glass” products might become popular as it has been the case with Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) most of the times. He thinks that the products have the potential to be popular. However, he sees a challenge of making these layered glass devices lightweight and durable.
According to Simmons, the patent focusses more on the products which would be part of living room or a home office and these would be show piece devices such as TVs and Desktop computers. He feels that the products should be durable and rough enough so that the user can keep them in the pocket and doesn’t need to use a rubber guard to save the gadget from shocks. He said that this has been the case mostly with Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), where the company manufacturers beautiful and well-designed products and the users need to use leather or rubber covers to protect them.
“What’ll be the real challenge is like I said, making something that you can carry around in your pocket or in your purse or whatever and you don’t have to put an ugly rubber, $40 bumper thing around it.” Simmons said.
There is a concern among a lot of people about breaking the glass of an iPhone or iPod and there might be a chance of sales getting impacted if an “all glass” device is introduced in the market and we should also consider the fact that the new devices might be pricier than the current Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) products.
The possible plans for making the glass products are using multiple layers of glass which would help the device from breaking. The Aluminum and steel products would still be around. Simmons spoke about the obsession of Steve Jobs with Wood, stone, metal and glass. So it was Jobs’ idea probably to go with the “all glass” products. So when you visit an Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) store, you can see stair case made up of glass completely and there are even stores made up of glass. In fact, the company patented this technology too.
Simmons said that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) products are always considered to be luxury tech devices and the glass products will not be any different. So he said that it would be interesting to see if the glass devices would be cheaper, however he doesn’t believe they might be.
