Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) are already inside a majority of phones across the globe and these companies now want to get inside your car too.
Sam Grobart of Bloomberg discussed what this move would mean to an end consumer. The companies have announced already to integrate their mobile operating systems into the dashboard of your car simply by plugging the phone into the vehicle.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s version is called “CarPlay” while Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s called “Android Auto”. Both are almost similar and have similar functionalities to an extent. Grobart said that once the phone is connected to the car, the in-dash display becomes like a mirror for a lot of apps on your phone. Navigation, phone calls, text messages and music services will now be coming directly from your phone rather than a hard drive under the dash.
“Right now, almost every automaker in the world has announced compatibility with atleast one of these programs and the good news is that many will support both.” Grobart stated.
The main idea of integrating the Mobile devices with cars is because both Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) don’t want to lose you when you are behind the steering wheel. This move also makes the auto makers happy because they have been trying to load more technology into the vehicles and there haven’t been great results.
He said that this is not just a benefit for the automakers; consumers also get equally benefitted because they don’t need to get accustomed to the automakers’ new interface and they can actually do all this with just a download and there is no need to visit the dealer for this.
“Using an interface you already know like iOS or Android will hopefully lead to less distraction on the road” Grobart said how a familiar platform can make life easier for drivers.
