After producing a long line of Kindle e-book readers and tablets, Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) is all set to make their debut in the Smartphone market. It is not easy to succeed in the Smartphone industry, even for an established company like Amazon. To compete against Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Samsung smartphones, Amazon need to bring in that ‘wow’ factor to their product. Walt Mossberg, Re/Code Co-Executive Officer talked on CNBC about his views on Amazon’s brand new smartphone.
Mossberg feels that there is space for new competitors in the smartphone market, especially in the premium segment, where more profits are made by many companies. But he thinks that fresh ideas and innovations should be made on the interface side of smartphones, which traditionally uses tap and swipe options. Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) made an attempt to implement their new ideas in phone interfaces, but Mossberg feels that they fell significantly short.
“I think their way of letting you use the phone, which involves lot of tilting or moving your head, turned out to be, in my case, kind of annoying and not particularly accurate,” he said.
Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) positioned their smartphone as a direct competitor to Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Samsung smartphones. He thinks that Amazon could have made their android smartphone with just the shopping features for $79. Mossberg said that Amazon worked for years on sensors that made tilting 3D effects possible and they wanted to enter as direct competition to other giants in the Smartphone industry.
Mossberg feels that all the new features that they have in their phone needs tweaking to make them work better. He thinks that Amazon’s Firefly app, which identifies printed web address, phone numbers and bar codes, mis-identifies the products. He said that Fire phone does not have lots of features and apps which are currently available in Apple or Samsung smartphones. Therefore, Amazon has a lot of work to do to get this thing up to the level, where somebody considering an iPhone or Galaxy, has can consider choosing their Smartphone instead.
