Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) is making a big step as it partners with Chelsea Handler to make a new streaming talk show format, Henry Blodget said in a recent discussion on CNBC.
The comment comes from the CEO of Business Insider as it was recently revealed that Handler will be working with the content deliver company on a new show.
The discussion was started by Julia Boorstin reporting on the deal made by Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) with the comedian. She noted that the partnership kicks off this October as the company airs a 1-hour comedy special titled “Uganda Be Kidding Me” which will feature Handler. Furthermore, the comedian will create 4 “docu-comedy” specials for the company, Boorstin continued, on topics which include NASCAR and Silicon Valley.
In 2016, Handler’s talk show will be released by Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX), Boorstin noted. The CNBC personality said that sources have told her that the company will be experimenting on how to release the show either by offering just one or several episodes in intervals. The show will reportedly not be released all at once. She also noted that her sources have told her that the new partnership does not cost a lot for the company, relatively speaking, as making a talk show is substantially cheaper than making other types of shows.
When asked about this new development, Blodget said:
“This is a big step for Netflix. If they’re successful here, it’s another wedge into the traditional TV model. Netflix, first of all, in a wonderful position with what they’re doing. The more scale they get, the more they can invest in content. Here, you’ve got fresh content that has to be consumed at a certain time, get it on any device easily. The Netflix interface across all devices is amazing. It’s so much better than the TV interface. That’s a powerful move and there’s a lot more they can do beyond this.”
He also noted Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) choosing Handler shows that they are targeting a demographic that is 10 years younger than him. However, he did say that from his newsroom, he understands that Handler is “quite popular”. He also said that the company is radically changing things and is making another big step into a new type of content.
