TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ:TIVO) President and CEO Tom Rogers told Bloomberg today that he believes that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) new Apple TV does not sufficiently provide the full television experience that people are accustomed to.
The comment comes after Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has been rumored to be planning a debut of a new home automation system at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). This home automation system, the Financial Times reports quoting sources familiar with the matter, includes a new version of Apple TV which will supposedly be released sometime later this year.
When asked about this rumored unveiling by Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and whether adding the home automation layer to their Apple TV by the iPhone-maker, creates a new challenge for TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ: TIVO), Tom Rogers, who is the former President of NBC Cable and Executive VP of NBC appeared to be confident that his company is doing something significantly different from what Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and a few other companies like Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL), Roku and Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) are doing. He said:
“Apple is obviously a formidable company. There are many apps through the smartphone that try to provide some kind of TV control. Apple TV (is) like Google TV, Like Roku, like Amazon Fire. Those are all ways to get broadband content to the television…the slice of television that comes from streaming and the web. They do not enable today the entirety of your television experience and all the cable channels, pay channels and video-on-demand from the operator. So while those are interesting ways to be able to get a piece of the television experience, they’re really very different from what we’re doing for cable operators, trying to provide this one way to get everything. It would be like trying to carry around two or three music devices in your pocket for different kinds of music that you wanted. No one would want to do that.”
