Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) recently revealed its Model S All Wheel Drive feature. In an article on Green Car Reports, David Noland, explained how Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) is able to increase the efficiency of its Model S Car despite of the fact that all wheel drive tends to deplete the efficiency because of increased weight and combustion processes. Noland thinks that in conventional cars having internal combustion engine, the efficiency is reduced upon the introduction of all-wheel drive because of the addition of gears, friction and chemical processes. Tesla is clearly taking lead from Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (ETR:BMW)‘s latest model i8 model, which uses a three-cylinder plug-in hybrid for maintaining low carb efficiency.
Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA)’s CEO, while explaining the all-wheel drive features said that Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) Model S P85D will work on the principal of force shifting and the car will sustain its efficiency by continuously shifting the weight on front and rear ends. Noland said that although Musk didn’t explain the complete mechanics of the new system, Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) will achieve the efficiency by using two motors. One motor will be for acceleration and the other one will be for high speed cruise control. Recently, Jake Fisher from Consumer Reports reviewed Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (ETR:BMW) car and said that having an internal combustion engine, the fuel economy of Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (ETR:BMW) cars is not good as compared to Tesla’s electric cars.
As of single motor, Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) engineers had to choose between acceleration and top speed. Tesla went with acceleration, claims Noland. The tradeoff was because of the single fixed-gear motor limitations.
Nolan thinks that Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA)’s Model S sales got hurt in Germany because of this trade off. In the US, people mostly don’t over-value the top speed upon acceleration. Single motor Model S with 85-kWh motors can make up to 125 mph. This speed is slower than Sedans that are available in the market.
The revamped gearing in the new 85D model by Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) has cleared off this flaw. The new model can make up to 155 MPH. This was achieved by introducing two motors. The rear motor is for maintaining the acceleration whereas the front motor is for high speed cruise control. Three-cylinder gas engine of Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (ETR:BMW) makes it a non-green car whereas Tesla can be easily tagged with Green car award.
Ken Griffin’s Citadel Investment Group hold around 46.5 million Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) shares.
