Shana Glenzer in an interview on Fox Business talked about the scope of scanning that Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) undertakes on its users’ accounts. Google has recently reported one of its users to the authorities for engaging in child pornography after scanning images in his account. Meanwhile, Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ:FB)’s social media platform was a subject a massive outage last week as the service went down in some countries, although the service was later restored’ after a massive outcry from its followers.
The popularity of Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ:FB) was put to test during the outage as some people are reported to have gone to the extent of calling the police to report the matter. Some people are also reported to have hit the reload button a number of times in amazement, not believing the service was down.
“There was a widespread panic apparently; […] it baffles me that someone called 911. I think you will see a lot of people who would probably reload-reload, over and over in disbelief that it was down. But taking it to that next level and calling 911, that even surprises me as someone as a big Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ:FB) user,” said Shana Glenzer.
The arrest of the sex offender in itself is a good thing. However, it raises concerns as to what extent the company has direct access to its users’ accounts. This matter is particularly important now, in the age of privacy concerns. This development essentially surprises the casual users of Gmail. Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) has been scanning its users’ accounts from time to time as a way of carrying out targeted advertising by essentially directing specific types of adverts to their accounts.
“[…] Anything in your email is being scanned. We are not individually sitting here reading all your emails or looking through your images but if something like this situation comes up, we are going to notify the police or quite frankly. We are going to provide you with more targeted ads which will provide us with more money that is another use case for it,”Glenzer said, referring to Gmail terms of service.
Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) has admitted using its technology to identify child sexual abuse imagery as it tries to make its network favorable for use, especially for kids.
